It is universally known that email is easy to use and very accessible. Because it is so easy to use, it means that information can be shared at the touch of a button. It is no surprise that email is the preferred communication tool in the workplace with an estimated 98% of all business-to-business communications being done in this manner. Moreover, it is estimated that in excess of 100 emails are sent per day. However, like any system, it needs to be managed appropriately to mitigate potentially negative effects such as information overload and inappropriate sharing of sensitive information. Training is therefore needed to ensure that all users are clear how it should be used and needs to be based on best practice policies. This helps to ensure that, in a healthcare setting, information and communications can take place safely and securely. Best practice should consider other forms of communication and when best to use them. For example, when it is okay to send a digital communication as opposed to making a telephone call.
