Abstract

Heavy metals pollution and disposal of agricultural waste (such as rice husk) are the major
environmental issues. Indeed, a sustainable approach such as reusing or modifying the agricultural
waste as the adsorbent to remove the heavy metals from wastewater is the most desired solution of
these environmental issues. However, investigation on the potential use of the agricultural waste as
the adsorbent is still required. In this context, this chapter explores a study on adsorption of a heavy
metal, namely zinc(II) ions from aqueous solutions using thermally treated rice husk by investigation
on the effects of heating temperature and period of rice husk, pH, initial Zn(II) ions concentration,
adsorption temperature and contact time, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption performance. In
addition, significant factors, and interaction effects of these factors are discussed in this chapter.
Besides, characteristics of the adsorbent is presented in the chapter which can be useful for the future
application.
