Abstract

African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) is one of the economic commodities of freshwater fisheries which is quite familiar to the people of Indonesia. African catfish is a well-known commodity due to its ability to tolerate a wide range of environmental constrains, fast growth, and resistance to diseases. The aim of this study was to examine the effect and determine the best probiotic dosage on the efficiency of feed utilization, growth, and survival of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). This study used an experimental method, a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 3 treatments with 3 replications. Labelled treatment A 105 CFU/mL, treatment B 106 CFU/mL, and treatment C 107 CFU/mL added to commercial feed. The test fish used were African catfish with an average weight of 5.01±0.01 gram African catfish were reared in cages with a size of 80x60x60 cm at the stocking density of 96 fish/cage. Management of the experimental fish was carried out for 42 days using the relative feeding rate method. The results showed that the addition of probiotics in the commercial feed had a significant effect (P<0.05) on Total Feed Conversion, Feed Utilization Efficiency, Food Convertion Ratio, and Relative Growth Rate., but had no effect (P>0.05) on the survival value of the African catfish. Based on these results, the best dose of probiotic addition was obtained at a dose of 107 CFU/mL (treatment C) which resulted in a TKP value of 1284.21 ± 2.68 g, EPP of 66.43 ± 2.26%, FCR of 1.49 ± 2.26 g and an RGR value of 4.25 ± 0.04% per day.
