Abstract

Background: Type-2 Diabetes mellitus (DM) (Non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes) is characterized by hyperglycemia from a combination of defects in insulin secretion and insulin action, accounts for the vast majority of people around worldwide.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) as an adjuvant therapy to treat type-2 DM patients with Oral hypoglycemic agents (OHAs).

Methodology: In this 3 months, retro-prospective study, comparing Glycosylated hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels of before and after treatment outcomes in both groups like patients with type-2 DM (OHAs group) and type-2 DM with gastric disturbances (OHAs+PPIs group).

Results: Results of HbA1C levels after the treatment of OHAs+PPIs group showed a reduction of 0.4% (P-0.0001) by compared with before treatment HbA1c levels. But OHAs group monotherapy (Metformin) 0.3% (P-0.0006) and dual therapy (Glimepiride +metformin) 0.7% (P-0.0001) showed increased levels on after treatment. 30, 60, & 90 days OHAs+PPIs used patients were included, among them 60 & 90 days used OHAs+PPIs showed the reduction of HbA1C levels with 0.8% (P-0.0001) and 0.7% (P-0.0324) than 30 days used patients.

Conclusion: Adjuvant therapy with PPIs show indirect effect of gastrin may increase the insulin secretion and the delay in gastric emptying slows down the speed of intestinal calorie supply, in type-2 DM with gastric disturbance patients PPIs potentially blunts the postprandial increase in blood and also PPIs used as an adjuvant therapy for the rapid lowering of HbA1c levels in uncontrolled type-2 DM patients with/without gastric disturbances along with OHAs.
